At the age of 12, Maximilian had a vision of the Virgin Mary that profoundly changed his life. He joined the seminary, studied, wrote and produced a magazine and radio show to battle religious apathy. In 1941, the Nazis imprisoned him in Auschwitz. While there, a father with many children was selected for execution as punishment for an escape attempt. Maximilian volunteered and was killed in his place.
